Maternal-Fetal specialists monitor, manage and treat conditions that can complicate a woman’s pregnancy or can increase risk to the health of the mother or baby. These highly trained physicians collaborate with other specialists to provide comprehensive prenatal care that supports optimum results for our patients.

Central DuPage Hospital offers world-class care and resources for high-risk pregnancies preconception, during pregnancy and after childbirth. Maternal-Fetal specialists and neonatologists provide round-the-clock availability to address unexpected or complex needs of pregnant women and their infants.

Why a Maternal-Fetal Specialist?

There are varied reasons why a pregnant woman might need a maternal-fetal specialist for prenatal care. Common medical complications that could affect pregnancy may include:

  • Pre-existing health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, autoimmune conditions and blood disorders
  • Multiple gestations (expecting twins, triplets, etc)
  • History or risk of genetic disease or congenital anomaly
  • Previous miscarriages
  • Fetal growth delay
  • Family history of congenital heart disease (CHD) of the fetus
  • Chomosomal anomalies


CDH offers a full range of services and sophisticated diagnostic tests at the Maternal-Fetal and Genetic Diagnostic Center. Our comprehensive consultative services are conducted as needed throughout pregnancy and during labor and delivery to identify concerns in the mother and developing baby.

Counseling services and diagnostic testing include:

  • Pre-conception genetic testing
  • Genetic counseling and diagnostic testing
    • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
    • Amniocentesis
    • Diabetes and nutrition counseling, education and management
    • Biochemical screening
    • Fetal Ultrasounds
      • Ultrascreen with nuchal translucency
      • Genetic ultrasound
      • Standard Level 1 review for fetal growth
      • Level II comprehensive anatomic review and growth of fetus
      • Fetal Blood flow studies
      • Fetal echocardiography

      Lurie_ChildrensLurie Children's at Cadence Health pediatric cardiologists* - specialists in fetal heart diagnostics - perform all perinatal cardiology exams. The pediatric cardiologists work closely with maternal-fetal specialists and obstetricians to plan delivery and postnatal care for your infant. One-on-one and multidisciplinary consultations are available.

      Maternal-Fetal Team

      In addition to maternal-fetal specialists, women with medical challenges affecting pregnancy may receive care from other specialists at CDH. Our services include potential multidisciplinary conferences with all medical personnel needed to discuss and assist in planning your plan of care. Your clinical care team may include:

      • Physicians and specialists, board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine
      • Pediatric cardiologists, specialized in fetal heart diagnostics
      • Other specialists such as neonatal/pediatric surgeons as needed
      • Board-certified geneticists, specialized in genetic testing and counseling
      • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, specialized in fetal diagnostics
      • Neonatologists to address a newborn’s special medical needs
      • A Perinatal Nurse Practitioner
      • Certified Registered Nurses in Obstetrics


      Maternal-Fetal services are located at the Women’s Subspecialty Center in Outpatient Services, Suite 419 at Central DuPage Hospital.
