Breast Health Center
A Comprehensive and Compassionate Approach to Breast Health
Breast cancer accounts for nearly one of every three cancer patients seen at Central DuPage Hospital (CDH). Here, we’re doing more to help women fight against breast cancer, with more treatment choices, more support services, more resources and more sensitive care from dedicated professionals.
Prevention & Screening
CDH provides support services using the latest technology to aid in early detection of breast cancer by offering exams such as:
- Digital screening and diagnostic mammography
- DXA Scans
- Breast ultrasounds
- Breast MRI
Road to Recovery
At the Breast Health Center of CDH, the team works with you every step on the path to recovery. We’re there to guide you with expert care, compassion, respect and education to help you make informed decisions about your own care. We are committed to providing comprehensive patient-centered care that encompasses the physical, educational, emotional and spiritual needs of women and their families. We work with women facing breast cancer and other forms of breast disease.
The team respects the patient-physician relationship as a critical component in the patient’s overall experience. Cancer specialists and the nurse navigator work collaboratively with independent physicians who refer women to the Breast Health Center for care, to keep referring physicians well-informed about their patient’s treatment and progress.
Our services are designed to provide the best treatment options for women with breast cancer, while also paying careful attention to each woman’s needs. From diagnosis through treatment, recovery and follow-up care, we remain committed to sensitive care.
Our services include:
Provided through Winfield Radiology Consultants, S.C. Affiliated with Central DuPage Hospital, these physicians specialize in breast disease. Diagnostic techniques include digital mammography, ultrasound, mammoscientography, fine-needle biopsy, stereotactic biopsy and other minimally invasive diagnostic methods.
Provided through Winfield Pathology Associates. A vital part of the cancer team, pathologists work behind the scenes to analyze tissue samples from biopsy and define the type of cancer and stage. This information is very helpful for making prudent decisions about treatment.
- Quick results...
...from diagnostic tests. It’s nerve-wracking to wait for results. Most women will receive an answer within 24-48 hours after a test.
- State-of-the-art treatments
Using state-of-the-art chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgical approaches. Your physician will help you choose the treatment options that are best for you.
- Multidisciplinary conferences...
...about each breast cancer patient’s care. Treatment planning occurs in multidisciplinary conferences that include medical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists and surgeons, as appropriate. Physicians may then offer these as recommendations to each of their patients.
- Patient advocacy
From diagnosis through treatment and follow-up care, our nurse navigator works closely with patients and physicians to facilitate smooth movement through the treatment process. The nurse navigator also performs ongoing assessments to monitor each patient’s progress.
- Resource library
Our cancer resource library features multimedia educational materials on breast disease, treatment options and other information related to breast health.
- Resource guide
The comprehensive resource guide addresses the physical and emotional aspects of breast cancer.
- Cancer support groups
Support groups can be very helpful for patients and their loved ones during cancer treatment. There are many resources available 7 days per week that provide excellent support. CDH staff works closing with the Amercian Cancer Society (ACS), LivingWell in Gevena and Wellness House in Hindsdale.
- Spiritual support
Available through our chaplaincy, regardless of religious affiliation.
- Lymphedema management program
Helps patients who experience swelling of the upper arm as a side effect of treatment. Therapy for lymphedema is offered through Rehabilitation Services at Central DuPage Hospital.
- Follow-up care
Our care doesn’t end when the patient leaves the hospital. Follow-up care may include home visits from physicians or nurses while the patient recovers at home after surgery and phone calls to check on a person’s well-being for as long as a year after diagnosis.
