Surgical Weight Loss Options

Patients within our program are able to lose a substantial amount of weight and keep it off over time with the help of weight loss surgery.  Routinely, health conditions associated with clinically severe obesity are significantly improved or completely resolved after weight loss surgery resulting in a more healthy, better quality life.

Detailed below are the surgical treatment options for weight loss offered within our program.

  • The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass procedure minimizes the amount of food going into the stomach as well as the amount of food that is absorbed in the digestive system. This is achieved by separating the stomach into a small and a large section. Food goes into the smaller stomach section, resulting in less food giving a sensation of fullness. Food then passes through a shortened section of the small intestine, allowing less food to be absorbed and used by the body.  This procedure can be performed laparoscopically or through an open incision.

Patients that undergo laparoscopic or open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery achieve an average weight loss of 60 to 80% of their excess body weight approximately 12 to 18 months following surgery.  On average, patients are able to keep off 55-59% of their excess body weight after five years.

  • The Lap Band®, or Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure incorporates an adjustable band which is placed around the top portion of the stomach, allowing the amount of food going into the stomach to be controlled.  The band can be easily adjusted during follow up office visits to let in more or less food, to achieve a feeling of fullness or satiety after meals as well as weight loss at a rate of approximately 2-3 pounds per week. Adjustments to the band are made until the overall desired weight loss is achieved. This procedure is minimally invasive, adjustable over a person’s lifetime, reversible, and performed laparoscopically.

Lap Band® surgery patients achieve an average weight loss of 36 to 60% of their excess body weight approximately 12 to 24 months following surgery.
