Which Option is Best for Me
Which Treatment Option Is Best For Me?
Any overweight, obese, or clinically severe obese adult or child would positively benefit from healthy weight loss and weight management. The treatment option that is best for you depends greatly upon your individual Body Mass Index (BMI), the presence of contributing health factors, guidance from your Bariatric Treatment Center physician, and personal choice.
Our program offers both surgical and non-surgical options for healthy weight loss and long term weight management. The Medical Weight Management program is a comprehensive, non-surgical option for weight loss which includes initial consultation and follow up with a board-certified endocrinologist, registered dietitian, exercise specialist and clinical psychologist (optional).
This comprehensive program also offers surgical options for weight loss. To be medically considered as a candidate for open or laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery or the Lap Band® laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure, you should first calculate your BMI and then the following criteria established by the National Institute of Health should be applied:
- Between 18 and 60 years of age, with variances at the discretion of the surgeon.
- BMI of at least 40 kg/m2. For females this is about 80 pounds overweight; for males this is about 100 pounds overweight.
- Individuals with a BMI of 35 kg/m2 with significant co-morbid health conditions may also qualify.
- There is a history of multiple weight loss attempts.
According to the National Institutes of Health, an increase of 20 percent or more above a person’s ideal body weight, as determined from the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tables, is the point at which excess weight becomes a health risk. Obesity becomes clinically severe when it reaches the point of significantly increasing the risk of one or more obesity related health conditions or serious diseases (also known as co-morbidities) that can result in either significant physical disability or even death.
To further help you determine whether weight loss surgery is the right treatment option for you, we offer Informational Sessions, Initial Surgical Consultations, and the EMMI software program.
