Intraoperative MRI

iMRI

Central DuPage Hospital is the only hospital in Illinois to take neurosurgical technology to the next level with full-field intraoperative MRI (i-MRI).

Crystal Clear Surgical Imaging Now Available During Surgery

The i-MRI is a state-of-the-art surgical tool that provides high-quality, more-detailed imaging viewable during surgery. In traditional MRI, imaging occurs before and after a patient’s surgery to determine whether the surgical plan had been achieved. Scanning the patient during surgery allows the neurosurgeon to more accurately assess the extent of tumor removal, thereby ensuring maximum possible tumor removal and minimal removal of healthy tissue. Because surgeons do not need to rely on pre- and post-operative images, the likelihood of repeat surgeries is reduced and surgical safety is increased.

We Bring the MRI to You

The full-field i-MRI is a portable MRI that delivers high-quality imaging when necessary during surgery. To ensure that the operating room is free of a magnetic field during surgery, the full-field i-MRI will be stored in an adjacent room and integrated into the operating room via a rail and cable system on the ceiling at the time it is needed.

Which Patients Can Benefit from the i-MRI

i-MRI is particularly useful in the treatment of patients with:

  • Tumors located close to areas of important brain function
  • Pituitary tumors
  • Masses along the skull base
  • Epilepsy
  • Movement disorders (in placing electrodes for deep brain stimulation)

If you or someone you know would benefit from the i-MRI, please call 630-933-4CDH (4234) to speak to a physician on staff. For more information, call 630-933-4056. TTY for the hearing impaired 630-933-4833.
