CDH Offers Free Skin Cancer Screening


February 24, 2006, Winfield, Ill.—As the sunnier days of Spring approach, health professionals from Central DuPage Hospital are offering community members a weapon in the fight against skin cancer: a precautionary skin screening.  On Saturday, March 18, from 1- 4 p.m., board-certified dermatologist Sharon Horton, M.D. will be conducting a free skin cancer screening by appointment only at Wyndemere Retirement Community, 200 Wyndemere Circle in Wheaton.    Dr. Horton is on staff at Central DuPage Hospital and has offices at Advanced Dermatology & Mohs Surgery in Batavia, Ill. Fibromyalgia Support Group

This group was established for participants to share their experiences about the impact of fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome on their lives.  This month’s meeting, “What Can Support Groups Do for Fibromyalgia?” will be held on Tuesday, March 21, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at Health Track Sports Wellness, 875 Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn. Informational Class on Joint Replacement Surgery

Central DuPage Hospital is offering a free community class for individuals scheduled to undergo joint replacement surgery.  The program offers information on physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing care and discharge planning in relation to hip and knee replacement.  Classes will be held the second and fourth Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. (hip replacement class) and 11 a.m. (knee replacement class) at the CDH Conference Center, 0S033 Church Street, Winfield.  Registration is requested.  Please call 630-933-4CDH.

American Liver Foundation Support Group

Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) offers a monthly support group for patients, family and friends of those afflicted with all types of liver disease, including viral and other forms of hepatitis.  Sponsored by the American Liver Foundation (ALF), meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 7p.m. in the Winfield Room at CDH, 25 N. Winfield Rd., Winfield.  Confidentiality is respected.  Patients and healthcare professionals are encouraged to attend.  Call (630) 399-5709 for more information.

Support Group for Mothers

This group for mother’s and infants meets every Tuesday from 1 – 3 p.m. on the lower level conference room at Charlestowne Convenient Care Building at 2900 Foxfield Road in St Charles.  There is no fee and no need to sign up.

Smoking Cessation Support

Through the Nicotine Anonymous program, CDH offers support for adults trying to quit smoking and to prevent relapse.  Free sessions are held every Wednesday from 7-8:00 p.m. in the Winfield Room at Central DuPage Hospital.  Call 630-933-5286 for more information.

Bariatric Informational Meetings

Central DuPage Hospital is now offering monthly bariatric informational meetings to educate the public on the benefits, risks and criteria for bariatric surgery, a procedure for permanent weight management.  A bariatric nurse clinician, dietician, and CDH bariatric surgeon will be on site at each meeting for questions.  Meetings will be held the second Monday of every month from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the CDH Conference Center, OS033 Church Street, Winfield.  To register for this free program, call (630) 933-4CDH.

Bariatric Post-Operative Support Group

Meetings focus on the long-term needs of the postoperative patient, providing additional guidance while addressing lifestyle changes, physical and psychosocial adjustments and shared experiences during the months and years after surgery.  Hosted by a bariatric nurse clinician, meetings are held the third Monday of every month from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Central DuPage Health Conference Center, 0S033 Church Street, Winfield.  A support group for Lap-Band patients will be held the fourth Monday of every month from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Central DuPage Health Conference Center, 0S033 Church Street, Winfield. Bariatric Post-Operative Exercise Classes

Aquatics exercise classes designed for bariatric patients and low-impact aquatic exercise classes for bariatric patients are held each week at Wheaton Sports Center, 1000 W. Prairie Avenue, Wheaton.  Chair aerobics classes, low-impact aerobic classes, exercise ball aerobic classes (patients learn to balance while sitting on an exercise ball) and personal training sessions are also available at the CDH Conference Center, 0S033 Church Street, Winfield.    For information on times or to register, please call (630) 933-4CDH.

Bariatric Nutrition Support Group

This support group meeting is hosted by a bariatric dietitian and focuses on the nutrition and behavior modification aspect of surgery.  It is intended for patients preparing for surgery for obesity, or for those who have had it.  Friends, relatives or support providers

of a patient involved in the surgical treatment of obesity are welcome.  Meetings are held the third Wednesday of every month from 6:30-7:15 p.m. at the CDH Conference Center, 0S033 Church Street, Winfield.  Call 630-933-6745 for more information.

Eating Disorders Support Group/Overeaters Anonymous

This group is designed for individuals with eating disorders, including bulimia, anorexia nervosa and compulsive overeating. Overeaters Anonymous is a 12-step program, modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous. Y-Me Breast Cancer Survivors Support Group

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance

Low Vision Support Group

Living with Lupus

This group provides emotional support and useful insights for adults living with lupus; meets the second Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Danada Convenient

Postpartum Depression Support and Education Group

This group provides emotional and social support for women who are struggling with depression after the birth of their babies. Mended Hearts

Holding our Angels Near and Dear (HAND)

This group provides emotional and social support for those who have lost a baby, including loss during pregnancy; meets the third Monday of each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Danada Convenient Care, 7 Blanchard Circle, Wheaton. Call 630-582-0874.

Fit for Life Exercise – Senior Aerobic Exercise

This class is for the young-at-heart interested in staying fit and having fun through low-impact workouts to lively music in a non-intimidating environment.  The group meets in the Activity Room of Wyndemere Retirement Community, 200 Wyndemere Circle, in Wheaton on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8 – 9 a.m.  There is a drop-in fee of $3 for this class and no registration is required.  Please call 933-4CDH for more information.

Sit ‘n Fit Chair Exercise

This workout for seniors will improve circulation and range of motion of joints, while increasing flexibility and muscle strength.  All of the exercises will be centered around a chair; sitting, standing and walking around this fitness tool.  This group meets in the Activity Room of  Wyndemere Retirement Community, 200 Wyndemere Circle, in Wheaton on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 – 11 a.m. and Wednesdays from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.  There is a drop-in fee of $3 for this class and no registration is required.  Please call 933-4CDH for more information.

Gentle Yoga for Seniors

Arthritis Exercise

If you are one of nearly 40 million Americans affected by arthritis, join this chair exercise class to help you either maintain normal joint movement and relieve stiffness or restore flexibility, if it has been lost.  Those with physical limitations are encouraged to participate.  Classes are held in the Activity Room of Wyndemere Retirement Community, 200 Wyndemere Circle, in Wheaton on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.  There is a drop-in fee of $3 for this class and no registration is required.  Please call 933-4CDH for more information.
