CDH Offers Non-Surgical Weight Loss Program

WINFIELD, Ill., May 12, 2010 -- The Bariatric Treatment Center at Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) recently expanded its program to include the New Direction® Weight Loss System, a medically-supervised low and very low calorie diet. CDH currently offers surgical and medical weight management options with a multidisciplinary support structure.

“We know patients need support, education and counseling to lose weight and keep it off no matter what method they use,” said Sandra Berger, RN, MSN, MBA, CNOR, manager, Outpatient Services. “We can design a program to fit a patient’s lifestyle and support them to make the life changes necessary to succeed long term.”

Appropriate for females forty pounds or more overweight and males fifty pounds or more overweight, this program is suitable for patients with type 2 diabetes and is particularly beneficial for patients who have other health concerns related to obesity.

The New Direction program at CDH is comprised of three phases -- reduction, transition and maintenance. The amount of weight the patient needs to lose determines the length of each phase. Patients are required to attend weekly one hour sessions, meet regularly with physicians on the CDH medical staff, have relevant medical tests, weigh in, purchase nutritional products and attend an educational seminar. “The seminars cover a range of topics and are given by a multidisciplinary team,” Berger explained.

The Bariatric Treatment Center includes an Aramark dietician, physician and psychologist from the medical staff of CDH and an exercise specialist and nurse.

New Direction informational sessions are held at CDH the second Monday of every month from 6-7 p.m. in the Winfield Room and on the last Friday of the month from 11-12 noon in Women and Children’s conference rooms 1 & 2. If you would like more information about New Direction, call the Bariatric Treatment Center at 630-933-6745/TTY for the hearing impaired 630-933-4833.
